What Is Emotional Awareness?

In my daily practice with clients, we explore many challenges, but one theme continues to rise to the surface again and again: emotional awareness.


Emotional awareness is something we all need to develop.

But what does that really mean? And why is it so important?


At its core, emotional awareness is the ability to recognize, manage, and consciously process your emotions.


It's about tuning in - not tuning out.


In order to become emotionally aware, we have to allow ourselves to feel.


Yet, that’s not what most of us were taught.


We’ve been conditioned to believe that showing emotion is a sign of weakness. That real strength is holding it all together, staying composed, and pushing through, no matter what. We're praised for being “so logical,” while being “too emotional” is often judged or dismissed. Vulnerability has been misunderstood as fragility.


But Here’s The Truth: Suppressing Our Emotions Isn’t Strength - It’s Fear.

Fear of losing control. Fear of not being able to put the lid back on once we open that emotional Pandora’s box.


It takes real courage to feel.

Feeling is not only how we begin to heal - it’s how we return to our most authentic selves.


The reality is, most of us weren’t taught how to feel growing up. We were taught to avoid discomfort, to push it down, to distract ourselves from what we didn’t know how to hold.


But emotions are energy in motion. When we don’t allow ourselves to feel, that energy becomes trapped. It builds up pressure in our bodies and can even manifest as physical, emotional, or mental illness.


We cannot let go of our emotions until we have felt them. But to be able to feel them we have to recognize that they are there.


Emotional awareness begins with simply noticing, becoming present enough to recognize what’s there.


It’s about slowing down. Taking your time. Giving yourself the space to notice, and the permission to feel.


Only then can we move through it. Only then can we free ourselves.
