What does it mean to be a decent human being?
Often, we associate decency with kindness, fairness, and respect. But let’s dive a little deeper—being a decent human also extends to how we treat others' contributions, whether it's their ideas, knowledge, or creative work.
Imagine this: Someone has an incredible talent for inventing unique cake recipes.
You taste one of their cakes, and it’s unlike anything you’ve ever tried—so good that you ask them for the recipe. Out of generosity, they share it with you. Now, what happens next is where human decency comes into play.
The Two Paths
Some people bake the cake and, when others compliment it, happily share, “This incredible recipe? I got it from [insert baker’s name].”They honor the source, celebrating the creativity and kindness of the person who shared it.
Others, however, bake the cake, accept the praise, and never mention the recipe’s origin. They might even let others believe they invented it themselves, basking in admiration that wasn’t theirs to begin with.
Now, pause for a moment. Which of these feels right to you? Which path reflects decency?
The Heart of Human Decency
Human decency is about recognizing that we’re interconnected. None of us exists in a vacuum; we constantly learn, grow, and create thanks to the contributions of others. To honor someone’s ideas or knowledge is to respect the effort, creativity, and generosity behind it.
When we fail to acknowledge those who inspire or help us, we not only disregard their contribution but also miss an opportunity to deepen connections. Giving credit where it’s due isn’t just polite—it builds trust and reinforces a culture of generosity.
Why It Matters
Acknowledging the source of our inspiration doesn’t diminish us. On the contrary, it reflects humility and authenticity. It shows that we value the exchange of ideas and understand the importance of fairness.
When someone generously shares their “cake recipe”—whether that’s a creative idea, wisdom, or advice—they’re offering a piece of themselves. Honoring that offering is a way of saying, “I see you, and I value what you’ve given me.”
Being a decent human being isn’t always about grand gestures. Sometimes, it’s as simple as saying, “This recipe came from someone incredible. Let me tell you about them.”
Let’s truly value and respect each other in all aspects of life—yes, even when it comes to cake.
